Keeping Your Instant Lawn Healthy throughout Summer

Keeping Your Instant Lawn Healthy throughout Summer

As the weather warms, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about how you can keep your instant lawn green and healthy during summer. Keep your lawn from suffering through the heat with these easy summertime maintenance tips.

Mow high

Mowing your lawn supports healthy root growth and makes it more heat tolerant. Taller blades provide more shade, stopping weeds from germinating and taking the nutrients meant for your grass. Keep your mower blade sharp and try not to cut more than a third of the grass blade.

Prevent pest invasions

With summer comes a wide variety of bugs and insects that can cause damage to your lawn. They can lead to damaged roots, yellowish grass blades and irregular brown patches. To prevent this, apply grub control products. If you’re also noticing signs of grub infestations, you have to deal with their removal immediately to keep your lawn from being overrun.

Water deeply

During summer, your lawn will benefit more from infrequent deep watering than frequent shallow watering. Water thoroughly once or twice a week, and allow the water to soak to the roots, reaching at least 12cm deep. To check if you’ve watered enough, perform the screwdriver test. Push a screwdriver into the soil and if you meet too much resistance, you need to water more. The ideal time to water is early morning, even before sunrise if possible, to keep the water from evaporating too fast.

Fertilise warm-season grass

If you have warm-season grass, such as Kikuyu Kenda or Matilda Buffalo, you can give it a boost by applying fertiliser. Fertilising in early summer can help your warm-season grass grow thicker and healthier and also improve their heat resistance. Take note to use fertilisers that are especially formulated for summer use to avoid burning your lawn.

If you otherwise have cool-season grass, like fine fescue, you can hold off fertilising the lawn until spring or fall.
