Getting Rid of Lawn Grubs

Getting Rid of Lawn Grubs

Having grubs in your lawn is far from unusual. But, only when the grubs begin to overrun your instant turf do they become a cause for concern. A quick population boom amongst lawn grubs can lead to larger pests and creatures descending on your lawn to eat their larvae.

Grub eggs lay dormant during winter and hatch when the weather becomes warmer. Grown grubs eat at the grass roots, and they give birth to another batch of eggs that restart the cycle. Left unchecked, these grubs will damage the root systems and your lawn will suffer from weak roots.

Signs of grub presence

The swift detection of lawn grubs is paramount to their removal. If you’re worried that there might be a grub infestation in your lawn, look for the following signs.

Discolouration

Grubs cause root damage, which then results in the grass turning yellow as it wilts and dies slowly. If there are yellowish patches throughout your lawn, you might be dealing with a possible grub infestation.

Spongy patches

Spongy patches are also caused by damage to the roots. Since the root systems are losing their hold, the grass is no longer anchored to the soil. When you roll the spongy patches, you will be able to see the grubs feasting on the roots.

Increased animal presence

Animals such as birds flocking on and scratching at your lawn are a sign that there are grubs attracting their presence.

Nematodes

Nematodes are microscopic organisms that attack the grubs’ bodies, killing them without causing lawn damage. Nematodes are released to the lawn, after which they will attack the grubs by releasing a bacteria that multiplies until the grubs are killed.

Milky spore

Milky spore is a kind of bacterium sold in powder form. As an effective long-term solution that wards off grubs, it is ideal for lawns where there are plenty of grubs to spread the bacteria. The more grubs there are, the easier milky spore can create a bacterial environment to kill them off.
