Commercial Turf

Commercial Turf and Lawn Installation in Melbourne

Commercial turf needs to do more than look good when it is first installed. It needs to suit the site, handle the way the area will be used, and establish properly without creating problems for the people responsible for maintaining it.

At Seed & Turf, we supply and install commercial turf for projects across Melbourne and Victoria. We work with developers, landscapers, councils, sporting facilities and other commercial clients, supplying fresh turf cut to order and providing installation where required.

We specialise in Bentgrass and Fine Fescue for commercial applications, with options for standard supply and turf grown to specific project requirements. We grow our turf on USGA specification sand and produce our sod without internal netting. This makes ongoing maintenance such as aeration, scarifying and dethatching easier.

Turf Varieties For Commercial Projects

We currently specialise in two commercial turf options: Bentgrass and Fine Fescue. We grow both on USGA specification sand to support drainage and consistent turf production. We can also grow turf to specific requirements for projects that need a particular variety, blend, growing medium or cutting height.

Bentgrass Lawn

Our Bentgrass varieties include Penn G2, Penn A1 and Penncross. Each has different characteristics, so the best option depends on what you need the finished surface to do.

One practical advantage of our Bentgrass sod is that it is grown without netting. This makes it easier for grounds teams to carry out maintenance such as aeration and dethatching after installation.

Fine Fescue Grass

Fine Fescue is a good option for commercial landscapes where a fine, dense turf is wanted without the same level of precision maintenance required by a specialist Bentgrass surface.

Our Fine Fescue blend contains 50% Creeping Red Fescue and 50% Chewings Fescue. It performs well in cooler conditions and shaded areas, ideal for parks and other landscaped commercial areas.

Why Choose Seed & Turf’s Commercial Turf?

Commercial turf projects come with different pressures than a residential lawn. You may have a fixed handover date, a large area to cover, other contractors working around the site, or a grounds team that needs the turf to meet particular specifications.

We understand that the turf is only one part of the job. Supply needs to be coordinated properly, the turf needs to arrive fresh, and the installation needs to be carried out correctly. With Seed & Turf, you can expect:

  • Fresh, Cut-to-Order Turf: Turf is cut close to delivery or collection, helping ensure it arrives ready for installation.
  • Commercial Quantities: We can supply turf in bulk for larger landscaping, development and sporting projects.
  • Custom-Grown Turf: If standard turf doesn’t meet your project requirements, we can discuss a growing program around your preferred variety, blend or specifications.
  • Supply and Installation: You can arrange turf delivery for your own contractor, or have our team handle the installation as part of the project.
  • Local Melbourne Supply: Our farm is located in Carrum Downs, giving us a convenient base for supplying projects throughout Melbourne and surrounding areas.

Commercial Turf For Outdoor Spaces

Different commercial sites put different demands on turf. A golf green has very different requirements from a park, just as a landscaped development has different requirements from a specialist sporting surface.

Golf Courses

Bentgrass is a specialist choice for golf courses where you need a fine, consistent and closely mown surface. You can commonly see it on golf greens because of its dense growth, fine texture and ability to perform at very low mowing heights.

Parks

Fine Fescue’s fine texture makes it a good choice for parks, landscaped areas, and other sites that receive shade. The appropriate turf will depend on the site and intended use, so we recommend discussing intended use, site conditions and maintenance requirements before you order.

Sporting Facilities

Bentgrass is ideal for precision surfaces such as golf and bowling greens. For other sporting applications, the appropriate turf depends on the site and intended use. We recommend discussing the project with our team before making a selection.

How Does Commercial Turf Installation Work?

We keep the installation process straightforward: assess the site, prepare the soil, deliver and lay the turf, then make sure it is watered and settled correctly so it can begin establishing.

Commercial Turf Installation – FAQs

How Much Does Commercial Turf Installation Cost?

There isn’t a fixed price for commercial turf installation because every project is different.

The total cost can depend on the turf variety, total area, site access, existing ground conditions, soil preparation, installation requirements and whether you need standard or custom-grown turf.

For a large commercial project, the best way to get an accurate figure is to provide us with the project details and the approximate area. We can then quote based on what the site actually requires rather than giving you a generic per-square-metre price.

How Long Does Commercial Turf Last?

A well-installed and properly maintained commercial lawn can remain in place for many years, but its lifespan depends heavily on the turf variety, site conditions, traffic and maintenance program.

A specialist Bentgrass surface, for example, is managed very differently from a general commercial landscape. How often the area is used, how it is mown and watered, and how quickly wear is repaired will all affect its long-term performance.

The better question is often which turf is appropriate for the expected use. Choosing the right variety at the start can make a significant difference to how well the lawn performs over time.

Does Commercial Turf Require Maintenance?

Yes. Turf isn’t maintenance-free once it has been installed. The amount of maintenance required depends on the variety and how the area is being used.

Mowing, watering and fertilising are part of normal lawn care, while specialist turf such as Bentgrass can require more precise mowing and regular maintenance to maintain its playing characteristics.

We can help you understand the ongoing requirements of the turf before you choose it, so you know what will be involved after installation.

Is Commercial Turf Durable Enough for High-Traffic Areas?

Some commercial turf varieties are better suited to regular wear than others. Bentgrass, for example, is primarily selected for specialist sporting surfaces where surface quality and close mowing are important, rather than simply choosing it because an area gets heavy foot traffic.

For high-use areas, we recommend looking at the actual conditions of the site, including expected traffic, sunlight, irrigation and maintenance. From there, we can help determine whether one of our commercial turf options is suitable or whether another turf solution would be a better fit.
